TPI was the first to introduce the new safety collapsible steering shaft.
No other company has spent so much research and development on the FJ40 power steering conversion. Back in 1975 we could only offer the old "spud shaft" design. This system proved to be dangerous because the solid mount "spud shaft" had no movement between the steering box and steering column. When the body flexed during use it could cause the box to leak, or worse, it could pull the shaft out of the steering box. In 1989 we changed to the new "slip joint" design, which allowed movement in the steering shaft. The result was no more steering box failures due to body flexing. Now TPI is offering the new collapsible steering shaft to reduce possible injuries in a front end collision. Also, the new column shaft has the u-joints already installed. Comes with collapsible/slip joint with u-joint assembly, mounting plate, tie rod shaft, and tie rod. Remember to order the proper column support bearing sold separately.
